FERTILITY SUPPORT

For the last few years, Simin has specialized in providing treatment for natural conception and alongside assisted conception, as well as related medical conditions such as recurrent miscarriage and pregnancy complications. She has seen many couples and has assisted patients through  IVF and has built up a strong knowledge base and trying to work with the majority of leading IVF units and fertility clinics. While taking a holistic view and using traditional diagnostic tools, she operates in an integrated way, working alongside consultants and using Western diagnostic approaches and reports to help her with treatment.

Fertility medicine has many ‘grey’ areas and leading consultants frequently have conflicting views on diagnosis and how to address treatment. She is able to discuss all potential options, not only the ones that we provide at the clinic, so clients have a good understanding of their choices. We believe that the more patients know, the abler they are to make the informed choices that will get them to their goal as quickly as possible.

ACUPUNCTURE AND NATURAL PREGNANCY

Around half of the couples we see at the clinic are looking to conceive naturally. Some have started trying relatively recently, and others may have already explored other options. Some patients are looking to conceive their first child, while others may be having difficulties having subsequent children. For female patients, the Chinese medicine acupuncture approach will take a detailed look at the menstrual cycle to identify where improvements can be made. In conjunction with blood tests, scan results or Western diagnosis, this leads us to a treatment plan. Similarly, for men, the overall health is looked at to see what impact it is having on the quality of sperm production. In practical terms, we will see many recognized conditions in the clinic, including:

  • Unexplained infertility
  • Endometriosis
  • Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS)
  • Fibroids
  • Immunological fertility
  • Non-ovulation/Amenorrhea
  • Sperm Issues

ACUPUNCTURE TREATMENT FOR IVF CLIENTS

Acupuncture and to some extent herbal medicine are increasingly being used to assist and improve IVF treatment. While being a traditional therapy, this is one of the best examples of how it can be adapted to new situations. Also it shows how closely and successfully western and eastern medicine can work together.

The study shows that the success rates for IVF conception to occur are usually between 20-30% depending on the clinic.  In a German study, a 26% success rate was achieved for women receiving no acupuncture, while a 43% success rate was achieved by those receiving acupuncture. Studies in China have achieved similar results. While there have been no large European studies. Chinese reports suggest this percentage can be further increased by up to 40-60% with the use of Chinese herbal medicine. Most recently a British medical journal report suggests acupuncture can improve ivf success rates by up to 65% See here

THERE IS A PROCEDURE WE FOLLOW:

  1. Preparation treatment for IVF can begin several months prior but even 1 month before can make a difference to the fertilisation and treatment at the time can improve implantation success. We first treat the patient as a fertility case, make the assessment and try to improve and regulate the menstrual cycle if necessary (eg reduce pain, PMS signs or regulate length) and then attempt to increase blood flow to the uterus and make the eggs, endometrium and cervical mucus better and stronger.
  2.  As the IVF approaches, we nourish the uterus and ovaries in order that more good quality follicles can be extracted and a better implantation environment is formed.
  3. During IVF if possible, we then tend to see people as soon as possible prior to embryo transfer and as soon as possible after. This can be arranged seven days a week and out of hours if necessary. We see people before, to try to invigorate blood flow in the local area in order to make the body more receptive to the embryo. After the transfer, we try to stabilise the hormone level to keep the embryo safe. This also calms and relaxes the uterus so that it does not reject the egg. For clinics performing split embryo transfer the pre and post acupuncture will be performed twice.
  4. After conception has been achieved, we continue with acupuncture and sometimes herbal medicine to reduce the increased risk of miscarriage that occurs with IVF induced pregnancies.

In addition to treating the female partner, we would always advise checking the male partner as good quality, free flowing sperm does make a large impact on the chances of success. Whether you are attempting IVF or ICSI, there is a lot that can be done to help the process.
